About the Program
GRADUATE PROGRAM IN SOCIAL WORK
The Graduate Program in Social Work – Master’s/Doctoral Degrees– at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (PPGSS/UFSC) was established in August 2001. In 2010, the Program’s educational project was revised and extended in order to establish the doctoral program. In the same year, the Brazilian Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) approved the new program, which began in 2011 with grade 4 (out of 7) in CAPES evaluation. The creation of the doctoral program is the result of a great deal of reflection and maturity of the whole Department of Social Work at UFSC. Thus, the program has received the priceless contribution of everyone involved: faculty, students, staff and professionals of the field.
The aim of the PPGSS is to educate and qualify professionals for research, teaching and practice in the field of Social Work and in related areas of studies, thus enabling them to work within the framework of public and private social policies. The major field of research of PPGSS is “Social Work, Human Rights and Social Question”, which represents a critical theoretical and political perspective.
The program also includes the Katálysis journal, published since 1997. The journal is now a regular biannual publication with national and international circulation. It is recognized and ranked by QUALIS as an A1 journal and is currently indexed in the Scielo and EDUBASE databases, among others.
Currently, the program’s faculty consists of 18 doctoral degree holders and has been expanding and improving through postdoctoral studies. The student body is presently composed of 61 students. Annually, 25 students are admitted in the Master’s and 9 in the doctoral program. Admission to PPGSS occurs on an annual basis, and incoming students are granted scholarships by CAPES. Notably, PPGSS is the only master’s and doctoral degree program in Social Work offered at a federal university in Southern Brazil. We are still struggling on and making history!
